Why Resilience and Balance Go Hand in Hand

Dec 01, 2023

Resilience and balance are two areas I focus on a lot with clients. To me, they have EVERYTHING to do with each other.

I see resilience as your flexible ability to deal with the negative experiences you face. Both the big, tough setbacks that happen in your life AND the small daily stressors.

It is WAY harder to navigate the setbacks and daily stressors when your tank is empty or you feel like you're sacrificing what really matters to you.

And when you are balanced, your tank is definitely NOT empty and you DO have time and presence for what does matter.

To be more resilient, you must take care of yourself and what matters to you. To be more balanced, you’ll need to get way better at navigating the ups and downs.

Especially those small, everyday stressors!

What does this look like?

Waking up in the morning and being able to let go of anxious thoughts about your day and to-do list.

Getting your kids out the door in the morning and yourself to work on time, while remaining calm and patient (especially when the kids are not so calm).

Being present in a meeting even though your last conversation did NOT go well.

Feeling overwhelmed, but able to step out of it to focus on what's most important right now.

Leaving work on time and ignoring that unhelpful inner voice that says “you didn’t do enough”.

Noticing you are complaining about a situation and deciding to instead focus on what you can control.

Living your values even though others around you may do it a different way or tell you otherwise.

Paying attention to when you feel like you can’t do these things . . . because you’re likely exhausted or spread thin.

And figuring out what you need to fill your tank so you can better navigate it all.

For me, alone time supports both my resilience and balance these days.

It's space where I am not responsible for anyone else's needs.

It’s when I can distance myself from the voices of other people so I can better hear my own.

It's time set aside that I fill my own cup, whether reading a book or meditating or doing something that gives me joy.

So I can better navigate whatever the day or week brings.

What is one thing you can do this week to support your own resilience and sense of balance?

Your future self will thank you for it.
