Learning To Trust Yourself

Feb 14, 2024

Today, I want to talk to you about learning to trust yourself.

Earlier in February, I had the honor of attending and speaking at a personal development event in Saskatoon called Reconnect.

The topic I spoke on was different than my usual speaking and workshops in companies on balance, focus and resilience as leaders.

At Reconnect, I talked about my own journey in learning to follow my intuition for the big moves in my life, such as . . .

  • a divorce in my early 20's
  • stopping overworking at the most demanding time of my corporate career
  • deciding to start my own business a year later
  • buying our dream lake house
  • speaking and putting myself out there in that way.

As well as the specific progress I made to write a book the past few months called . . . Your Balanced (and Bold) Life: Work Less, Live More and Be Your Best.

While learning to navigate ALL of the fears, doubts and naysayers!

When you learn to trust your intuition more, you'll discover it's the wisest adviser you'll ever have – it's giving you the nudge on what to do, what not to do, and how to live your life.

This trust in yourself will give you the courage to decide what YOU really want and act on it.

I shared three key lessons that have helped me in learning to trust myself (a work in progress) and feel more confident in my choices, stress less about "what if I get it wrong?" and take bold action in my life.

I am sharing with you in the hopes of inspiring you to take the bold action that you want to take deep down.

Lesson 1: Trust that your desire is there for a reason.

You are not crazy for wanting what you want.

The sooner you decide to trust it and take action on the next bold step, the sooner you will experience what is meant for you.

You can figure it out as you go. And if you're not quite sure, maybe you're not listening closely enough.

What would you do if you weren’t worried about what other people think or about getting it wrong?

Lesson 2: Give yourself a real deadline or commitment.

To make any meaningful progress, I need a real commitment or deadline to follow through – to be accountable for what I said I would do . . . to someone else.

This could look like having the conversation or giving my notice, or hiring a coach, or in the case of writing the book, it was to hire an editor.

It's too easy to let yourself off the hook if you're the only one who knows about it.

What is a firm action you could take to give yourself a real deadline and commitment to move forward on what YOU really want?

Lesson 3: Know that you’re probably not going to want to do it.

This all comes down to your mindset.

Even after making a decision, there are MANY times that the fears and doubts creep up and leave me wanting NOT to do the thing. We all have a habitual place we tend to stop.

This is normal!

Anytime you are doing something new or out of your comfort zone, the fears and doubts will likely come for the ride.

Make sure those fears and doubts are in the passenger seat and you're the driver. And pay attention to what helps you gain back your confidence, be brave and see it through.

Had I let the fears, doubts and naysayers drown out my intuition, I would not have my family or our epic summers at the lake. I would not have learned how to be balanced and perform at a high level.

And I definitely would not be writing a book for you.

Remember, your intuition is the wisest advisor you'll ever have. It really is guiding you on what to do, what not to do, and how to live your life.

In the big moves and the everyday, smaller choices. It's up to you to listen and have the courage to act on it.

So, what is a desire within you deep down? What would you do if you weren’t worried about what other people think or about getting it wrong?

How can you make a real commitment to the next step?

And what mindset or support do you need to see it through?

Trust in yourself and your intuition more.

It's nudging you too.
