How Can You Work Less and Accomplish More?

Aug 31, 2020

Wow, it's September already!

This is a transition period (in a very unusual time) as we figure out kids and school and ramping up work projects.

It can be easy to get swept up into busy life as that slower summer becomes a distant memory.

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that when you maintain balance in your life (even when things feel chaotic), you perform at a whole new, higher level.

Because when you are tired and run down, or even just getting by, you are less focused, less productive, have less energy and everything feels harder than it needs to be.

I get it. A few years ago, I used to work all the time and when I was not working, I was thinking about work. I was constantly feeling torn between high performance and my family.

I knew something had to change and so, in the busiest time in my corporate career, I learned how to create boundaries, say no, and focus on what really adds value.

And since I left my corporate career, I have discovered how to turn my mind off and be fully present at work and at home.

One stressor I had not overcome though (and just avoided with my excellent boundaries) was working and kids AT THE SAME TIME. This stressed me out. I felt like I did a crappy job at both.

So I just avoided it. I rarely ever worked on my business with kids around.

WELL, in March that all changed (as you know), and boundaries between work and home became seriously blurred.

I had to be more intentional to remain balanced, not fall into old bad habits, and continue to perform at a high level.

And finally, tackle my stressor of working with kids around . . . because that is the reality.

But, I did NOT start working evenings and weekends again to fit it all in. Because I know better now.

When you work less and take time to recharge, you are more productive, think more clearly, make better decisions, have more energy, more patience...every single outcome improves.

It’s counterintuitive and makes a profound difference. And this approach can save you a lot of unnecessary stress, exhaustion, and even burnout once you make the shift.

If you find yourself finishing up “one more thing” and next thing you know, it’s two hours later, and your family is waiting for you to come join them for supper or an evening walk.

If you find yourself trying to be everything for everyone, and get pulled into everyone else’s requests and fires and never have time to get done what would actually move the needle.

If you find yourself impatient with your team or your kids because you are tired, even though that’s not the leader or parent you want to be.

And you’re just not sure how to still perform and be successful, without working long hours. Or might not believe balance is possible with all the demands and expectations.

There is a different way. You do have more choice than you might realize.

There are things you can do now to create more balance and perform at a high level. To start your Fall off on the right foot.

Change can be huge and sweeping, but oftentimes it’s small changes in your mindset and day that make the biggest difference.

Now, you are probably leaving some breathing space for getting kids and work figuring out with kids going back to school.

What if you could start this year off with the right intention which can keep you from getting swept up into the grind again?
